Getting Back to Our Roots Service Trip to New Orleans, Friday, January 18-Monday, January 21 2019
Join teens from J-Teen Leadership, Temple Israel Center and Temple Sholom in Greenwich, Ct., as we return to New Orleans, the site of the first service trip organized by J-Teen Leadership after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Over Veterans’ Day Weekend, November 9-12, J-Teen Leadership traveled to Philadelphia to participate in meaningful service and learning that focused on poverty issues, including youth at risk, community health care, and food insecurity. Prior to the trip, the teens collected 700 lbs of donated items, including toiletries, school supplies, and clothes. Throughout the weekend the teens provided community service to multiple populations. They sorted over 2,000 clothes items, packed 2,600 lbs of food, learned about the criminal justice system, wrote over 100 holiday cards to incarcerated individuals, helped clean up two community gardens, collected $570 in donations to be distributed to the organizations with which we volunteered, and more!
2017-2018 Service Trips:
As a result of the massive devastation of parts of the United States and the territories of U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico from recent hurricanes, J-Teen Leadership, through a generous grant from UJA-Federation's Time for Good volunteer initiative, was chosen to lead immersive service trips to Houston and other storm affected areas. Trips were held on the following dates: December 8th-11th (Teens Only), February 16th-19th (Presidents' Day Weekend), March 2nd-5th (8th and 9th graders with a parent), April 20th-23rd (Teens Only)
Teen Houston Volunteer Reflection:
"The most meaningful aspect of the work we did was when we helped with the less privileged people build their houses after all they had gone through. I think that this really made a difference for their lives and I’m sure they were very happy we did that."
